Fatwa of Sheikh ul-Hind Regarding Khilafah (1920)

The following is the Fatwa of Sheikh ul Hind, Maulana Mahmood Hasan who was imprisoned by the British in Malta for 3 years due to him sticking to the truth and not disowning the Uthmani Khilafah. Shaikhul Hind and his student Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni (later klnown as Shaikhul Islam) were arrested by the Sharif Hussein in Hijaz (Makkah) on 23rd Safar 1335 (19th December 1916). They were sent to Malta via Cairo by a ship on 29th Rabbi al-Thanni 1335 (22nd February 1917) and clamped in the prison by the British for 3 years and 4 months. They were released and reached Bombay on 8th June 1920 (21st Ramadhan 1338). This time of returning from Malta synchronized with the period of the beginning of the Khilafat Movement in India.

Sheikh ul Hind was the head of Dar al ulum Deoband at his time, he directly supported the Khilafah and worked hard for its maintenance. He had met the Wali (governor) of the Khilafah in Makkah and the assistants of the Khalifah. The Wali gave documents to the Sheikh to help in the struggle of Muslims of India against the tyranny of the British. The foremost of these documents was an appeal from the Wali to the Muslims of India. In his appeal, the Wali of Makkah praised Sheikh ul Hind for launching the struggle against the colonial British rule and also exhorted Muslims of India to extend their full support. He also assured the Muslims of India of material support from this movement from the Khilafah. The document written by the Governor of Makkah is known in history as Ghalib Namah. After performing Hajj in 1334 AH (1915 CE), the Sheikh also met with Anwar Pasha and Jamal Pasha, who were officials of the Khilafah. Anwar Pasha too wrote a letter of appeal for the Muslims of India, appreciating their constant struggle against the British tyranny. The wording of the letter was similar to the Ghalib Namah, assuring the material support of the Uthmani Khilafah to the Muslims of India in their struggle against the British. The letter also exhorted all citizens and employees of the Uthmani Khilafah to have full confidence in Sheikh ul Hind and prove men and material support to his movement. Copies of these letters were made, smuggled to India in the face of all the challenges posed by the British intelligence services and later distributed in the whole of Yaghestan.

Most of the Ulema in India stood up for the issue of the Khilafah in the beginning of the 20th Century, unfortunately today it has become forgotten by many.

The text of the Fatwa demonstrates how Sheikh ul Hind used to see the duty of Khilafah and his view towards co-operating with the colonialists.

The Fatwa:

Questions: What do the Ulama and Mufti have to say on the following issues?

1) Due to extra expenditure, the managements of Madaris take grants from the British government. In view of their decision of non-cooperation with the British government, is it permissible or not to take such grants from the government?
2) Is the acceptance of government stipend, given to students and to those who hold titles in the British government, permissible?
3) Is it permissible for students to leave such, Madaris without giving any information to their parents, or guardians, or in the face of their opposition to such acts?
4) We are duty bound to provide sustenance to our wives, children and aged parents. Is it necessary to leave this duty for the cause of establishing Khilafat?
5) There are Madaris that accept grants from the government, or from the head of the provincial government, who are opposed to the cause of Khilafat and the non-cooperation movement. Is it permissible to teach, or study, or accept any sort of administrative or preaching job in such institutions?
6) Is it permissible to take money from the Khilafat fund for fulfilling bare personal necessities or for fulfilling requirements of those whose well-being is one’s duty?
7) What sort of relationship one should maintain with those who are government servants or those who are employees of a Madrasa that gets grants from the government?
8) In relation to the establishment of the Khilafat or non-cooperation movement against the British government, is it permissible to take help and cooperation (whether moral or material) from Hindus?
9) The money from the continual fund of the Aligarh School or its building that costs around forty hundred thousands rupees. The cost of library, books and peripheries would be thousands rupees. Is it or not duty of the members of the Madrasa to use them properly and protect them from getting damaged?
10) Is it necessary for students engaged in acquiring contemporary English education to acquire religious education too so that when they complete their formal education, they could impart education to others? Or is it necessary for such students to strive and make Khilafat and non-cooperation movements successful? In short, is the attainment of religious education preferable or participation in the Khilafat movement and the non-cooperation movement?

Answers

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful Praised be to Allah and peace and blessings on the chosen one.
Heart is after all a heart and not a brick or a stone that cannot be overwhelmed by grief, We will cry a thousands time, why any shall disturb us?

Before answers of these questions are given, it is very important that every true Muslim should come out from the prevailing narrow thinking and think in terms of the great blessings of Allah that have been bestowed upon us as Muslims. If we look deeply at the present situation in the light of our past experiences, it would be clear that the greatest and most precious wealth of Muslims is their Imaan (faith). And to protect it with all their might is the first duty of every Muslim. With what a cunning trick, shamelessness and deceitful acts this wealth is stolen away from us!

The enemies of Islam have left no stone unturned to strike against and harm the honour and prestige of Islam. Iraq, Palestine and Syria that were won over by the Prophet’s companions and his followers, after innumerous sacrifices, have once again become the targets of greed of the enemy of Islam. The honour of Khilafat is in tatters. Khalifat-ul-Muslimin (Muslim Caliph), who used to unite the entire community on this planet; who as vice-regent of Allah on this earth used to implement the universal law of Islam; who used to protect the rights and interests of Muslims and who used to preserve and ensure that the glory of the words of the Creator of this universe be preserved and implemented, has been surrounded by the enemies and made redundant.

“The mountain of problems that has been put on my shoulder, if the same were kept on the day, it would turn into the night!”

The flag of Islam is flying low today. The soul of Hazrat Abu Ubaidah (RA), Sa’d Bin Abi Waqas (RA), Khalid Bin Walid (RA) and Abu Ayub Ansari (RA) is restless today. Why is it so? It is because Muslims have lost their dignity, their honour and their self-respect. The bravery and religious fervour that was their forte and heritage, they have lost these due to their ignorance and over-indulgence in frivolities.
It is not only that in times of difficulty a Muslim does not help a fellow Muslim, but tragically that the eagerness to earn the goodwill and friendship of a kufir has led a brother to chop the head of his own brother. Muslims have drunk the blood of Muslims. Muslims have dipped their hands in the blood of their own brothers.

O’ the Children of Islam! And O’ the lovers of this great Nation! You know it better than me that the thunder and fire that burnt the tents in Islamic world and put on fire the castle of Islamic Khilafat were derived from the hot blood of Arabs and Indians. And the power of wealth with which the Christians have succeeded in subjugating Muslim nations, a great chunk of it was from your hard labour.

Thus, is there any stupid and thick-headed Muslim who won’t understand the results of cooperation with the Christians? And this too in a situation when a drowning man seeks the help of a haystack and looks for a way out for cooperation that would save him from drowning?
O’ my people! This is not the time for discourse and discussion in things like supposition and supererogation, but it is the time to act with Islamic spirit for the honour and prestige of our religion. I fear that differences, big or small, among Ulama might dampen (our) spirit and courage. I am not asking you to pick up sword and go to Iraq and Syria for Jihad against the enemies of Islam and fight alongside your brethren there. My only request is not to strengthen the hands of enemies of Islam and follow the following Commandments of Allah with courage and sincerity:

“O’ ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them….” (Surah Al-Maida, Verse:51)

“Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whose doth that hath no connection with Allah…..” (Surah A’le Imran, Verse:28)

“Bear unto the hypocrites the tidings that for them there is a painful doom; those who choose disbelievers for their friends instead of believers! Do they look for power at their hands? Lo! All power belongs to Allah.” (Surah Nisaa’, Verse: 138-139)

“O ye who believe! Choose not disbelievers for (your) friends in place of believers. Would ye give Allah a clear warrant against you?” (Surah Nisaa’,Verse: 144)

“O ye who believe! Choose not for friends such of those who received the Scriptures before you, and of the disbelievers, as make a jest and sport of your religion. But keep your duty to Allah if ye are true believers.” (Surah Al Maida, Verse: 57)

"Thou seest many of them making friends with those who disbelieves. Surely ill for them is that which they themselves send on before them: that Allah will be worth with them and in the doom they will abide. If they believe in Allah and the Prophet and that which is revealed unto him, they would not choose them for their friends. But many of them are of evil conduct”. (Surah Al Maida, Verse: 8—81)

“Thou wilt not find folk who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His messenger, even though they be their fathers or their sons or their brethren or their clan. As for such, He hath written faith upon their hearts and hath strengthened them with a Spirit of Him, and He will bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow wherein they will abide. Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah’s party. Lo! Is it not Allah’s party who the successful?” (Surah Al Mujaadalah, Verse:22)

“O ye who believe! Choose not My enemy and your enemy for friends. Do ye give them friendship when they disbelieve in that truth which hath come unto you..” (Surah Al Mumtahana, Verse: 1)

There are plenty of verses in the Qur’an to this effect and the collection of all such is not intended here. However, it should be clear that I have translated ‘Auliya’ as ‘helper’ and ‘friend’ here. The meaning and explanation is derived from the interpretation of stalwarts of Tafseer such as Imam Ibn Jareer Tabri, Hafiz A’maduddin Bin Kathir and Imam Fakhruddin Ra’zi. My purpose here is to explain only this much that under ‘non-cooperation’ both not to help them as well as not to take help from them is included. Thus: the answer to your 1st and 2nd question will be that the aids taken from the British government for Madaris and the scholarship taken by students are to be abandoned. And in the taking their decision of non-cooperation, students are not to depend on the permission of their parents, rather it is their rights that with due respect and honour they should prompt their parents to agree with them for non-cooperation against the British government. The dilemma that students are currently encountering was also faced by Muslims during the Prophet’s time. They also put this question before the Prophet about how could they possibly totally snap the relationship with Kafir (non-believers). For if they did so, they would be separated from their parents, brothers, sisters, and other relatives. Their businesses would be destroyed and their property would go waste. And thus their villages would be ruined. The answer to their questions were given in the following verse by the almighty Allah:

“Say: if your fathers, your sons, and your brethren, and your wives, and your tribe, and the wealth ye have acquired, and merchandise for which ye fear that there will be no sale, and dwelling ye desire are dearer to you than Allah and His messenger and striving in His way: then wait till Allah brings His command to pass. Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.” (Surah Al Tawbah, Verse:24)
Sometimes there is fear in the heart that if the movements that are going on all over the country failed and the government remained adamant, there are chances of great losses. These kinds of views were present then also. Thus the glorious Qur’an says: “ We fear lest a change of fortune befall us!” (i.e. Hypocrites say that our friendly relationship with Jews is for reasons that if in the course of time and with the turn of events Muhammed (PBUH) fails in his mission and Jews become victorious, we would be faced with great difficulties then.)

Almighty Allah answers them in the following verse:
“…And it may happen that Allah will vouchsafe (unto thee) the victory, or a commandment from His presence. Then will they repent fro their secret thoughts.” (Surah Al Maida, Verse: 52)

O’ my friends! Then catch hold of Allah’s Commandments and, believing in Him only, remain firm in your goals and stick to non-cooperation with the British. Whatever support and help of which you are capable and you can give to Islam and Islamic people, do not delay n extending it. The time is such whereby you cannot ignore it and let it go.

It is good fortune that the vast majority of Hindus is looking forward to your cooperation and support. The incident of Jalianwala Bagh in Punjab and the desire for the self-government have made the time propitious for non-cooperation with the British Christians. It is also heard that the Sikh League has decided in favour of non-cooperation. Keep the eye towards Allah and act when the time is propitious. Your friend and helper is only Allah! If the people of another community come forward and help in your pious mission and extend support in crisis, you should cooperate with them as well. You should be equally courteous to them; rather you should act more generously. The Glorious Qur’an says:

“ Allah forbidden you not those who warred not against you on account of religion and drove you not out from your homes, that ye should show kindness and deal justly with them. Lo! Allah loveth the just dealers. Allah forbidden you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helper to drive you out, that ye make friends of them. Whosoever make friends of them (All) such are wrongdoers.” (Surah Mumtahanah, Verse:8-9)

It would be wise to caution here that cooperation and relationship with Hindus does not mean that Muslims should mould their religion commandments to fit to the ways of Kufr. If they do it, it would be like earning sins in exchange for piousness.

My purpose is that you act upon the call of non-cooperation with the British government very sincerely. While doing it, have faith in Allah only. And those students who do not have some other obligatory work to do should participate in propagating this movement. Those who have obligation towards wife, children and parents should participate to the extent that their participation does not become the cause of neglect to heir family. And if some one strives to aid and protect Khilafat, and Khilafat Committee proposes a sum from its donations to fulfil his need, it is permissible for the person to take it.
In short, cooperation with Kuffar is not permissible. It is better to keep oneself and others away from the cooperation of the British. Muslims should take away their minds from everything and put their trust in Allah in whose hand the fate of both a beggar and a king rests.

Prudence, in my vision, is that the friends in destiny should choose the eternal beloved first
Then he should go ahead, enslaving in the curl lock of that beloved without caring for the consequences.
Now, I would wind up this argument with my petition and request that I am not a Mufti. Yet, I hope that my arguments would answer some of your questions. Along with the care and wellbeing of the building of the Aligarth College and its library, your conscience should also weigh and compare the value of Constantinople, Syria, Palestine and Iraq.
In the end, I deem it necessary to say here that to make non-cooperation movement a success depends upon our own moves. We should not do anything that would prove injurious to peace or cause blood letting. And this is the advice of all the intellectuals. We should imbibe this advise, otherwise there would be fear of loss instead of benefit.
Let us pray to Allah, the source of all honour, from the core of our heart that He should not dishonour the Ummah, should not make us the target of Kuffar and help us in all our endeavour and good deeds.

Wassalam,

Mahmood

Your well-wisher and seeker of Allah’s forgiveness.

Book of Fasting: Merits of Sawm & Ramadhan by Sheikh Abu Iyas

We are serialising some sections from the draft translation of  الجامع لأحكام الصيام ‘Al-Jami li Ahkam as-Siyam’ (A complete guide of the rules of fasting) by Sheikh Abu Iyas Mahmoud bin Abdul Latif al-Uweidathis Ramadhan, please note this is a draft translation so please overlook errors.

Sawm linguistically means refraining, silence, suspension and what is included in its meanings. Sawm has been mentioned with this meaning in Allah’s (swt) noble book. Allah (swt) says:
فكُلي واشربي وقَرِّي عيْناً فإِما تَرَيِنَّ من البَشَرِ أَحَداً فقولي إِني نَذَرتُ للرحمنِ صَوْماً فلن أُكلِّمَ اليومَ إِنْسِيَّاً }

"So eat and drink and be glad. And if you see any human being, say: ‘Verily, I have vowed a fast unto the Most Gracious so I shall not speak to any human being this day."  (Surah Maryam Ayah 26)
As for As-Sawm in the sharee’ah terminology, it is refraining from those things that break the fast and they are: food, drink, sexual relations, excess water through mouth/nose and vomiting, with the intention of getting closer to Allah (swt) from Fajr of a day until its Maghrib. This Sharee’ah meaning of fasting has been mentioned in numerous noble ayaat and there is no need to bring them up here as they are well known amongst people who are knowledgeable of them.
The Merits of As Sawm:
There are many Ahaadeeth that mention the merit of Fasting of which I will mention some:
Narrated from Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Prophet (saw) said:
1)
Narrated by Imaam Al Bukhaari (1904) and Muslim, Nisaa’i, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad.
Also from Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Prophet (saw) said:
Narrated by Abu Daawud At Tayaalissy (2485) and Ahmad.
And from Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Prophet (saw) said:
Narrated by Muslim (2707), An Nisaa’i, Ad Daraami and Bayhaqi. Ahmad (9712) and Ibn Majah narrated it with the following words:
< Every one of the sons of Adam’s actions is multiplies, a good action will have ten of it’s like or up to seven hundred times to what Allah wills, Allah Azza wa Jalla says: Except for fasting, it is for me  and I will reward for it...> The addition is ‘ to what Allah wills’.
2)      On the authority of Sahl bin Sa’d (ra) that the Prophet (saw) said: . Narrated by Buhkaari (1896) and Muslim and Nisaa’i. Ibn Maajah (1640) and Tirmidhi narrated it as following: < So those who were from amongst the Saa’imeen (faster’s) will enter, and whoever has done will never feel the quench of thirst again>.
3)      On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood (ra) that he said that the Prophet (saw) said:  Al Bukhaari (1905), Muslim, Daawud, Nisaa’i and Tirmidhi. Wijaa’a means to put pressure on the testicles or its veins so as to cut the desire.
4)      On the authority of Hudhayfah bin Al Yaman (ra) that he heard the Prophet (saw) saying: . Al Bukhaari (1895) and Muslim. Ibn Abi Shaibah (595:8) reported it with this wording: . And also from Hudhaifah (ra) from the Prophet (saw): . Narrated by Al Bazzaar (1038) and Ahmed and Al Haythami said that its people (narrators) are trustworthy.

5)      On the authority of Abdullah Ibn Umar (rah) that the Messenger (saw) said: . Narrated by Ahmad (6626) and its sanad (chain) is Hasan. Tabaraani also narrated it in his Al  Mu’jam Al Kabeer and Al Haakim narrated it and verified its soundness.
6)      On the authority of Abu Umaamah (ra) who said: Narrated by Ahmad (22501) and Nisaa’i, ibn Hibbaan, ibn Khuzaimah, Ibn Abi Shaybah, and Tabaraani in Al Mu’jam Al Kabeer. And in another version from Ibn Hibbaan (3425) and Nisaaa’i (Alayka bi sAum fa laa mithla lahu...) Fast as there is nothing comparable to it. Here ‘mithla’ is used instead of ‘idla’ in the previous version to mean ‘the like of/equal to’.

7)      On the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra) who said that the Messenger (saw) said: < There are three whose requests (du’aa) will not be turned down: The just ruler, the one who fasts until he breaks it and the one who is oppressed. Allah (swt) will raise them on the Day of Judgement without (al ghumaam) clouds and the doors of the heavens (skies) will be opened for them and He will say: With my Izza (glory) I gave you victory even if it was after a while>. Narrated by Ibn Maajah (1752). Al Gumaam has the same meaning as mentioned in the following Ayaat as Allah (swt) states:

يومَ تَشَقَّقُ السماءُ بالغَمَامِ
And (remember) the day that the Heaven will be rent asunder by clouds.. (Al Furqaan: 25)

هل يَنْظُرون إلا أَن يأتيَهُم اللهُ في ظُلَلٍ من الغَمَامِ
Do they then wait for anything other than that Allah (swt) should come to them in the shadows of the clouds (Al Baqarah: 210).

8)      On the authority of Othmaan ibn Abi Aas (ra) that he said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) saying’: . Narrated by Nisaa’i (2231), Ibn Maajah, Ahmad, Ibn Hibbaan and Ibn Abi Shaybah.

9)      On the authority of jaabir ibn Abdillah (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: < Our Rabb Azza wa Jalla said: Fasting is a shield (Junnah) the servent seeks to shield himself with it from the Naar (fire) and it (fasting) is for me, and I will reward/recompense for it>. Narrated by Ahmad (14724) with a sanad (chain) which is Jayyid (good) and also narrated by Al Bayhaqi.

10)   On the authority of Abi Ubaidah (ra) who said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say:  Ahmad (1690/1700) In a version of ad Daraami (1733): Tabaraani narrated it in Al Mu’jam Al Awsat (4533) from Abi Hurairah (ra).

So how noble are the Fadaa’il (merits) of the Ibaadah of Fasting. Fasting is a shield, i.e. a guard and protection. It is a blocker of desires when one cannot marry and it expiates the sins in the time of affliction. It intercedes on behalf of its master on the Day of Judgement and for those who fast belongs the gate of Ar Rayyaan, the one who enters from it will never experience thirst again. It is sufficient alone to look at what came in the Hadeeth, ‘Every one of the sons of Adam’s actions is multiplies, a good action will have ten of it’s like or up to seven hundred times to what Allah wills, Allah Azza wa Jalla says: Except for fasting, it is for me and I will reward for it’.

If there were no other ahaadeeth mentioning the merits of fasting then this would have been enough. It is true that there is no act equal to or like that of fasting as mentioned in the sixth hadeeth and the only result of this act is entering into Jannah as it came in the hadeeth reported by Hudhaifah (ra) and found with al Bazzaar  and Ahmad. Also as mentioned in the seventh hadeeth; it is the deserved right of the faster to be honoured by Allah (swt) and have his du’a responded to and answered.

The merits of Ramadhaan:

In relation to the merits of Ramadhaan the following ahaadeeth have been related:

1)      On the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Prophet (saw) use to say: . Imaam Muslim (552), Ahmad and Al Bukhaari in his At Tareekh Al Kabeer.

2)      And also from him (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: <’Shame/pity (raghima Anf) on the man who when I am mentioned does not pray on me and pity on the man who enters into Ramadhaan and does not have all of his sins forgiven before its passing and pity on the man who when his parents reach an old age and they don’t cause him to enter Jannah (because of his good treatment of them)’ Rabiy said: ‘I don’t know it (the hadeeth) except that he said:’ or one of the two (parents)’>. Imaam Ahmad (7444), Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaimah, al Haakim. Its Isnaad (chain) is jayyid (good).

3)      From Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: . Al Bukhaari (1899), Muslim, An Nisaa’i, Ahmad, Ibn Hibbaan, Ad Daarami with differences in some words.

4)      From Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: . Al Bukhaari (38) Nisaa’i, Ibn Maajah, Ahmad, Ibn Hibbaan, and Ahmad (8989) and Nisaa’i in a second version stating ‘all of his previous and forthcoming sins will be forgiven’. Al Mundhiri said the Isnaad is Hasan buy Hamaad had doubt in its connection or that the addition to the Hadeeth only goes back to one link in the chain from Qateebah bin Saeed from Sufyaan.

5)      From ibn Abbaas (rah) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: . Ibn Maajah (2994), Nisaa’i, Ahmad. Ibn Maajah (2991), Ahmad and Tirmidhi narrated the Hadeeth with the same wording from Wahab bin Khanbash. Ahmad (14855) and  Ibn Maajah also narrated it from Jaabir (ra). Al Bukhaari (1863) narrated from Jaabir (ra) and Muslim and Abu Daawud with the wording; ’Verily Umrah in Ramadhaan is like Hajj or Hajj with me>. Tabaraani in his Al Mu’jam Al Kabeer (364/25) and Abu Daawujd, Ahmad on the authority of Mu’qal (ra) (she) said: <’I have become old and sick. Is there an action that can recompense me for my Hajj? He (saw) said: ‘Umrah in Ramadhaan will recompense for it.’>

6)      From Abu Hurairah (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: . Ibn Maajah (1642), Ibn Hibbaan and Bayhaqi. Al Haakim narrated it and verified its soundness (saheeh) and adh Dhahabi agreed. Ibn Khuzaimah (1883) narrated it with a slight difference and Tabaraani in Al Mu’jam al Kabeer (1586) an Nisaa’i narrated similar to it except on the way of Utbah bin Farqad (ra).

The significance of the above ahaadeeth are clear and do not require further explanation. If I add the ahaadeeth related to the merits of fasting in a complete manner to this topic then the merits of both fasting and Ramadhaan combined can be revealed in a perfect way. Ibn Abbaas (rah) said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) was the very best (most generous) of people, and he was at his best in Ramadhaan when he would meet with Jibreel (rha) and he would meet Jibreel every night and would go over (revise) the Quran. The messenger (saw) was even better in bringing Al Khair (goodness) than the fair winds’. (al Bukhaari (6), Muslim, Nisaa’i, Tirmidhi, Ahmad and Ibn Hibbaan).

Captain that liberated Bab al-Hawa Border Crossing says will re-establish Khilafah

Directly after the liberation of the border crossing between Syria-Turkey the captain is interviewed and says they will re-establish Khilafah and wont go against the commandments of Allah! We ask Allah (swt) that these men stay true to their words!

Marriage–Why? When? With? What?

Love is a feeling shared by 7 billion people existing on the face of earth today. Islam has given the best possible way to channelize these feelings and gratify the satiety: "Marriage". It scintillates one's life and fill them with feeling of reassurance, security and happiness.
"For those who love each other, nothing has proven as good as marriage.” (Sunan ibn Maajah, Verified to be authentic by Sheikh al Albani in As Saheehah)
‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Auf رضى الله عنه migrated to Madinah with others. He had left all his trade, business and bank balance in Makkah and came to Madinah with absolutely nothing. After few days Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلمsaw some colors over his garments. He moved ahead and inquired “What’s this color, ‘Abdur Rahman”? ‘Abdur Rahman replied, "I have got married". He congratulated him, blessed him with du’aaa, had a bit of chit chat and moved ahead.
Prophet Muhammad himself got married to the richest woman in town. A prominent business woman having many potential suitors waiting for her. However, she preferred his impeccable moral character. Both embraced each other in simplest manner and no business elite got the invitation for their wedding.

No adjective ever produced by any dictionary can do justice to define his love for his daughter Fatimah رضى الله عنها. He loved her like anything. It was her wedding. He should have shaken the skies, should have booked Burj-ul-Arab and called the world's best catering service. Nay, but he wed his princess in the simplest manner that history would have ever scribbled. No elite class was invited, no hotel was booked, simplest food was provided.

Why?

“And among His Signs is this that He created for you mates of your own kind, so that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy for one another: Surely in that are Signs for those who reflect.” (Surah Ar Rum 30:21)
There is a craving in every man and woman, be he saint or sinner, rich or poor without any differentiation, called "Love". Love is a feeling shared by 7 billion people existing on the face of earth today. Islam has given the best possible way to channelize these feelings and gratify the satiety: "Marriage". It scintillates one's life and fill them with feeling of reassurance, security and happiness.
The closeness among couple has been described as depicted for no other relationship.
“They are a garment for you and you are a garment to them.” (Surah Al Baqarah 2:187)
Plus it ensures the "lawful" fulfillment of desires. Monasticism is a practice that utterly failed to establish itself. This practice goes against Nature. It is an open secret as to how the churches and nunneries became prostitution houses after having attempted to follow monasticism.
“Of your worldly life, I have been made to desire women and perfume, but the satisfaction of my eye has been made in the Salaah.” (Recorded by Ahmad and An Nasa’i. Verified to be authentic by al-Albani in Sahih Al Jami’)
"For those who love each other, nothing has proven as good as marriage.” (Sunan ibn Maajah, Verified to be authentic by Sheikh al Albani in As Saheehah)
The way we see it now it’s a financial and social contract between two families. This is not how Qur’an explains this ‘Ibadah. It is an ‘Ibadah which puts a check on our vain desires and gives us an official partner to love and who commits to save your religion and honor.

When?

"And marry those among you who are single…" (Surah An Nur 24:32)
Does this ayah give Goosebumps? Oh my son is not earning well, he doesn't have a home of his own, no car either, how is he going to support his wife? The All-knowing answers in the very same Ayah:
“…If they be poor, Allah will enrich them of His bounty. Allah is of ample means, Aware” (Surah Ar Rum 24:32)
Allah promises to give the job. Then why worry yourself?? It's all about having trust on The One Who deserves to be trusted the most.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "O young people! Whoever among you is able to marry should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty , and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting will diminish his sexual power." (Sahih Al Bukhari)
It is stated that whoever has the ability to get married should get married. Point in focus is that it is not asked to complete your degree, locate a good job, have some handsome salary and then spend few years in searching for your Dream Girl.
There are so many self-imposed no-no’s which delay this holy tie and ‘ibadah and make Haram easy to get. It will take a separate note to clarify how all no-no’s have nothing to do with Islam.
Islam doesn’t command you to inspect the whole ancestry of your potential spouse. Sahaba didn’t seek permission from all elders of their family before marrying. It is not mandatory that you stand on your own feet before you seek marriage. Your parents, who care for your education, boarding, lodging and messing, can’t they feed your wife for a few years? Why do Parents overlook the narrations which warn them that if they don’t marry their children in-time and they are going to be responsible for the sins they commit.

With ?

When Hafsa رضى الله عنها was mature, her father Umer رضى الله عنها went to Uthman رضى الله عنه if and asked him to marry his daughter. Then he went to Abu Bakr رضى الله عنه and asked the same. The story goes on and soon Prophet Muhammad married Hafsa. Umer didn’t wait for someone to ask for her daughter. Rather, he went and asked the best to marry her.
Marriage is an ‘ibadah and Sunnah of Prophet of Allah. It is one of the most important decisions of our life and it has to be for Allah.
" He who Gives for Allah, and Stops(with-holds) for Allah, And Loves for Allah and Hates for Allah, and Marries for Allah has completed his Faith " (Masnad Ahmed , Arna'oot classified it as Hasan)
"Whomever Allaah has blessed with a righteous wife, He has helped him with half of his religion, so let him fear Allaah with regard to the other half. (Narrated by al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak, classified as hasan by al-Albaani)
We should think of marriage as a commitment amongst two people to help protect each others religion. And then we should see who fits the best for this commitment.
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said , "A woman is married for four reasons, for her religion, her property, her status, her beauty, so you should choose one with religion." (Sahih Muslim)
In one of the famous nightly patrols of Umer رضى الله عنه he heard a conversation between a mother and her daughter. Mother was asking the daughter to bring water to mix with the milk. The daughter reminded her mother that the Khalifah had prohibited diluting milk. The mother said: “The Khalifah is not watching us”. The daughter said: “Even if the Khalifah is not watching, Allah is watching us”. The next day Umer sent his servant to inquire whether that girl was married or not, and then he asked his sons who of them was ready to marry a pious women. He didn’t carry out a long inspection of her family background, her education and her wealth. The practical demonstration of taqwa from the girl was enough for Umer to select a princess for his son. The holy tie resulted in the birth of Umer bin ‘AbdulAziz, who is considered to be by far the best Khalifah after the first four.

What?

“The best wedding is that upon which the least trouble is". (Sunan Abu Dawud, Verified to be Authentic by al-Albani)
So, all we get to see from the above mentioned Ayaat and Ahaadith is that marriage is a simple way for two people to start a new life. It is not supposed to be a mega-event of life which takes years of preparation. The marriage with the least trouble, least expense, least inspection is considered be to the best in the eyes of Allah.
Marriage is supposed to make life easy, and most of us see it as the starting of difficult life. The monstrous preparations of marriage, the innovated mega rituals, functions and the deviated concepts not only destroy the very purpose of marriage but also take away its very essence. So, the world we live in is one with the Haram easy, and the Halal difficult. Those who are already parents shouldn’t inspect the bank balances of those who ask their daughters hand in marriage. And those who are yet to marry, should know if they don’t fight to change the way our parents and society see marriage, it will keep on getting worse. It’s the duty of your parents to aid you in accomplishing this ‘Ibadah as soon as possible and not to hinder the progress with their ‘experienced’ whims and desires. If you are failing to marry on time, don’t blame the circumstances, blame your self, because :
"There are three whom Allah is bound to help: the mujaahid who strives (in jihad) for the sake of Allah, the mukaatib (a slave who has made a contract of manumission with his master) who wants to pay off his manumission, and a man who gets married, seeking to remain chaste." (Jami Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by al-Albaani)

اللهم زوج ايمنا واهدنا الى خير الهدى

Will Khilafah be established before the coming of Al-Mahdi?

Whether Mahdi would be the one to revive the Khilafah or Khilafah will be established before him and he’ll be the one who’ll fasten the pace? Consider the mentioned points which hint to the establishment of Khilafah before the coming of Al-Mahdi.
Then there will be a Khilafah on the way of Prophet-hood
We live in a world where there is no Islamic State (Khilafah) on the complete globe. There is no inch on the whole globe where the Hukm or Kalimah of Allah is established as a System. We all await the return of Khilafah and we don’t have any doubt that it will come.

It was narrated by Ahmed in his Musnad, from Al-Nu’man b. Bashir, who said: “We were sitting in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (saw), and Bashir was a man who did not speak much, so Abu Tha’labah Al-Khashnee came and said: ‘Oh, Bashir bin Sa’ad, have you memorized the words of the Messenger of Allah (saw) regarding the rulers?’ Huthayfah replied, ‘I have memorized his words’. So Abu Tha’labah sat down and Huthayfah said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) said ‘Prophet-hood will be amongst you as long as Allah wishes, then He will lift it up when He wishes to lift it up. Then there will be a Khilafah on the way of the Prophet, and it will be as long as Allah wishes it to be, then Allah will lift it up when He wishes to lift it up. Then there will be an inheritance rule (ملكًا عاضًا), and it will last as long as Allah wishes it to, then Allah will lift it up if when He wishes to lift it up. Then there will be a coercive rule(ملكًا جبرية), and it will last as long as Allah wishes it to be, then Allah will lift it up when He wishes to lift it up. Then there will be a Khilafah on the way of Prophet-hood.’ Then he was silent.”
Reference: Masnad Ahmed bin Hanbal (Hadith # 18430) , As-Saheeha al-Albani (Hadith # 5). It has been declared Hasan by Sh’uaib Arnaoot, and al-Albani classified it as Sahih. The text quoted is the one from Masnad Ahmed.

Few people think that Khilafah, the rule of Allah, will not be established before the coming of Al-Mahdi and Isaعليهما السلام . Even if the case is so, that doesn’t take away from us the duty of striving for the establishment of rule of Allah (Jihad) until they come. No matter, how distant the achievement of the goal is in terms of time, we still have to strive for it for our salvation and to get our name written in the forces of Mahdi. Prophet Muhammad laid the foundation of a vision which will be accomplished in the times of Mahdi. All those who share the same vision, be it the sahaba, those in our times, or those in the times of Mahdi fall in the same Army!
There are few indications in the books of history and Ahaadith which seem to indicate that the rule of Allah (Khilafah) will be established before the coming of Al-Mahdi and Isa علبهما السلام.
Point # 1-
يأتي على الناس زمان لا يبقى فيه مؤمن إلا لحق بالشام
It was narrated by Al-Haakim, and classified as Sahih, the narration of Abdullah b. ‘Amr, who said: “There will come a time when there will not be one believer left, but will rush to Al-Shaam.”
Reference: Mastadrak Al Haakim (Hadith # 8413), Dhahbi says it is according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim, in his Talkhees
It will be a time saying: "Either you are with us or against us “! It will be a time when Khilafah will be revived in Ash Shaam, and it would become a compulsion on all muslims to submit to that Khilafah! Ash Shaam would become a Dar ul Hijrah, and Muslims throughout the globe who are in Dar ul Kufr will have no other option but to go and join Ash Shaam (The only Darul Islam, Darussalam and Dar ul Hijrah) on the globe. People will give Bai’ah to Imam Al Mahdi in Makkah, and perhaps later on he’ll move his center to Bait Al Maqdis. So, this hadith doesn’t seem to refer to his times.
Point # 2 -
"Disagreement will occur at the death of a caliph and a man of the people of Medina will come... flying forth to Mecca. Some of the people of Mecca will come to him, bring him out against his will and give bay'ah to him between the Rukn and the Maqam. An expeditionary force will then be sent against him from Syria but will be swallowed up in the desert between Mecca and Medina. When the people see that, the God fearing people of Syria and the best people of Iraq will come to him and swear allegiance to him between the Corner and the Maqam. Then there will arise a man of Quraysh whose maternal uncles belong to Kalb and send against them an expeditionary force which will be overcome by them, and that is the expedition of Kalb. Disappointed will be the one who does not receive the booty of Kalb. He will divide the property, and will govern the people by the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace be upon him) and establish Islam on Earth. He will remain seven years..."
Reference: Reported by at-Tabarani in al-Awsat , by Imam Ahmed in his Masnad and by Abu Da’wud in his Sunan. According to Haithmi in his Majma' az-Zawaid the transmitters in at-Tabarani's narration are sound and authentic. But this hadith has been graded by al-albani as Da'eef in Ad Da'eefah and in The Takhreej of Sunan Abu Da'wud and also by Sh'uaib Arnaoot in the Takhreej of Masnad Ahmed.
The portion “Disagreement will occur at the death of a caliph” indicates the return of Khilafah before the coming of al-Mahdi.
Point # 3 –
"Three men, all of them sons of Khalifah, will fight over your treasure and none of them will take it. Then black flags will appear in the Orient, they will kill you in a manner in which no one had been killed before. Thowban added the Prophet said something else that I do not remember very well, then the Prophet said: "When you see this (man) pledge allegiance to him even if this requires you to crawl on snow as he is the Caliph of Allah, Al Mahdi"
Reference: Quoted by Al Haakim in his Mustadrak and he say it is according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim an Ad Dahabi has supported his claim in the talkhees. Also mentioned by Ibn e Majah in his Sunan with a different chain. Albani says its meaning is authentic except for the statement: as he is the Caliph of Allah, Al Mahdi.
Perhaps the dispute mentioned is a dispute on Khilafah (or hold of Al-Ka’ba) which is similar to the narration mentioned above. The ending of the hadith tells us how to get out this dispute.
There are many similar narrations. All of them mention the sons of Khulafa before the advent of Mahdi.
Point # 4 - Narrations tell us that Mahdi will fill the world with justice as it was filled with Injustice and inequality. So, it will be a matter that will be done step by done, and the first step will be laid before the advent of Mahdi. Remember, the era of al-Mahdi will be only seven years.
Point # 5 -
Islam didn’t spread over the complete Arabian Peninsula and the Roman and Persian Empire in times of Prophet Muhammad, the expansion occurred in the times of Abu Bakr, Umer and Uthman, so it’s logical to believe that Mahdi won't be the only one in this spread of Islam and Pious Khulafaa will precede him before it.
Considering the above points it is more likely that Khilafah will be established in Ash Shaam before the advent of Mahdi, remember there is no hadith stating that Mahdi will be the one to establish Khilafah for the first time after it is lost.
والله اعلم
May Allah help us join those who are striving to make the Kalimah of Allah Supreme!
